Koru is a 4-week workshop in mindfulness and meditation developed by two Duke university psychiatrists: Holly Rogers MD & Margaret Maytan MD. It was developmentally tailored for the emerging adult aged 17 to 27. There is ten years of evidence supporting its benefit.
Participants will learn mindful meditation, walking meditation, eating mindfully, mindful breathing exercises and working mindfully with thoughts, emotions and body scans.
THE KORU SYMBOL & MEANING
Koru is a New Zealand Maori word for an unfurling fern tip. It is a metaphor for maintaining a stable authentic self during the process of change. This has an especially strong correspondence with the developmental individuation process occurring during the emerging adult years, but indeed is also a meaningful metaphor for all ages throughout life.
WHY SHOULD I TAKE A KORU WORKSHOP?
Koru was initially developmentally tailored to specifically meet the needs of emerging adults.
Particular attention is paid to class size, course length, skills selection, age of participants, and quality of teachers and the program. Koru is evidence based and taught internationally.
Fully certified Koru teachers must have undergone training, observation and met strict criteria set forth by the faculty at the Center For Koru Mindfulness to become fully certified.
Generously, the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction program developers (associated with Jon Kabat-Zin) provided input to Koru faculty to ensure ongoing quality of the Koru teachings.
About 50 colleges nationwide are now offering KORU, because it works & so is catching on. It is also being taught internationally.
WHAT’S THE EVIDENCE SUPPORTING THE BENEFIT OF KORU?
Ten years of research shows college age students: Feel LESS STRESSED, LIVE MORE MINDFULLY, SLEEP BETTER AND HAVE MORE SELF COMPASSION as a result of Koru workshops.
Recent research shows ages outside the range 17 to 27, also benefit from Koru workshops.
